Year 6 - Key Stage 2
Welcome to the Year 6 page. Here you can find out what we are learning about and the exciting activities we have going on.
In Year 6 we enjoy daily lessons which include Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG), Guided and Independent Reading, Big Writing, Comprehension and The Power of Reading. At the moment we are reading ‘There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom’ and we absolutely love it! We love finding out what Bradley Chalkers is up to every day and what he plans to do next. Some of the things we have been doing include: writing diary entries, character descriptions and creating our own story boards to retell events from the book. Over the year we will be reading various other books and writing in different genres.
Daily Maths lessons will include: Number and place value; Calculating; Fractions, decimals and percentages and measuring. Every day we practise our times tables through two of our favourite games: ‘Shoot Out’ and ‘Around the World’. This is helping us to become much more confident in recalling the times tables up to 12x12. We even play these games practising the inverse (division!). It would be great if the children can be practising their times tables at home too.
Year 6 will have their PE session every Wednesday afternoon with coaches from Legacy. Children need their PE kit in school for PE lessons. The PE kit should include dark leggings/shorts/tracksuit bottoms, a white t-shirt and pumps/trainers. Due to health and safety, earrings need to be removed.
We are starting the year off focusing on Ancient Egypt! So far, we are loving it. We have done lots of research surrounding the Ancient Egyptian Civilisation, we’ve looked at countries which surround Egypt on the map, we also discovered facts about Cleopatra and The Great Sphinx of Giza. Our sketches of Cleopatra are fantastic and are displayed in the school corridor on our class display. We are also part way through making The Great Sphinx of Giza using clay and these are looking just as fabulous.
Other lessons in Year 6 include: ICT, Music, French, RE and PSHE. We encourage you to research all of our topics and get involved in the lessons through homework, adding to our class displays and personal interests. The half termly Curriculum Map will provide all the subject topics areas in more detail.
We give the children a Homework Menu each half term.
