Year Five

Year 5 - Key Stage 2

Mrs Bottomley and Mrs Murphy

Welcome to the Year 5 page.  Here you can find out about some of the exciting things you can expect this year.

English
In Year 5 we enjoy daily lessons which include Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG), Guided and Independent Reading, Big Writing, Comprehension and The Power of Reading.
We have weekly spelling tests. Please encourage your child to practise their spellings at every given opportunity.

Each child will have a reading book in class for independent reading along with a school library book.

Maths
Daily Maths lessons will include: Number and place value; Calculating; Fractions, decimals and percentages; Measuring; Geometry and Statistics. All of our lessons involve aspects of Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving.

PE
Our weekly PE session is led by coaching staff from Legacy Sport. The lesson takes place every Wednesday afternoon. It would be useful to leave PE kit in school so it is always ready if needed. The PE kit should include dark leggings/shorts/tracksuit bottoms, a light/white t-shirt and pumps/trainers. Due to H & S, earrings need to be removed.

Cross-curricular
This year we will be beginning our topic work by learning about The Vikings. Sometimes Cross-curricular will be a history led topic and sometimes it will be geography led. We will also include art and DT activities and lessons.

Other lessons
Other lessons in Year 5 include: ICT, Music, French, RE and PSHE. We encourage you to research all of our topics and get involved in the lessons through homework, adding to our class displays and personal interests. The half termly Curriculum Map will provide all the subject topics areas in more detail.

Homework
We give the children a Homework Menu each half term. A starter, main and dessert task should be completed and handed in every half term.
