Online Safety

At High Bank J, I and N School we take e-safety very seriously. In today's society many children will experience possible breaches of safety - whether this is in the form of cyber bullying, unsuitable pictures or sharing information online. It is our responsibility to prepare our children to cope with these issues so they have the knowledge and capability of being safe online.

With regular headlines in the news regarding the dangers online, cyber-bullying and the on-going social media issues, it is only right that e-safety is such an important aspect of the school’s curriculum. Ofsted include it as part of their inspections when they visit school to ensure that staff are doing the upmost to keep children safe online both in school and at home.

What is e-safety? (online safety)

Ofsted describes e-safety as a school’s ability to protect and educate the pupils and staff when using technology. It is also ensuring that schools have the appropriate procedures in place to intervene and support any incidents which have arisen.

When in school we ensure that we provide a safe and secure learning environment by using monitoring and filtering whereby we control what sites and links the children can access while at school. We do understand that this only protects the children while on the school premises and in delivering a high level education around e-safety we are teaching the children that, wherever they are, they know how to stay safe online.

For the older KS2 children, we teach them to be responsible online, using individual logons for laptops and computers, they become accountable for their own internet use as well as beginning to understand how to manage files, laptops and documents.

Education:

The e-safety curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, including:

  • Online behaviour – what is cyber-bullying? Sexting? And how to behave safely and with respect for others

  • Protecting your online reputation – understanding the risks as well as the rewards of sharing any personal data online

  • How to use social media (and safely!)

  • Understanding the reliability of online information

  • Data security – being aware of viruses and hacking as well as keeping your personal information safe and secure

  • To know what to do if you experience something you shouldn’t
